Working across the aisle is an integral component of the United States’ Congressional system. Amid growing polarization, this panel discusses how government continues to work despite partisanship and the future of working across the aisle.

Reema Dodin
Reema Dodin currently serves as Chief of Staff to Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI). She was previously a Deputy Assistant to President Biden and Deputy Director for the White House Office of Legislative Affairs, leading his Senate team on both legislative and nominations work. Dodin served in that role as a day-one appointee, after running legislative strategy for the nominations team on the 2020 Biden-Harris transition. Prior to that, she served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), where she ran his whip operation for the Senate Democratic caucus for almost a decade. On her own time, Dodin has volunteered as voter-protection counsel with several campaigns. She is also the co-author of a primer on House and Senate Floor procedures through Brookings publications, and a co-executive producer of a short film entitled Tallahassee, a New Yorker Screening Room Film. Dodin is from California and currently lives in Washington.
Maggie Dougherty
Maggie Dougherty currently serves as a Senior Professional Staff Member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee where her portfolio includes International Organizations, Democracy, Refugees, Women’s Issues, and Human Rights. Previously, she worked as Senior Policy Advisor to former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. In this position her portfolio included Europe, Human Rights, Humanitarian Assistance, and Refugees. She also previously served as Senior Congressional Advisor at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. where she managed the United Kingdom’s relationship with the U.S. Congress. From 2011-2016, she served in the Office of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) as a foreign policy advisor. Dougherty’s hometown is St. Peters, Missouri.
