Aspen is a place for leaders to lift their sights above the possessions which possess them. To confront their own nature as human beings, to regain control over their own humanity by becoming more self-aware, more self-correcting, and hence more self-fulfilling.

On September 5-8, 2019, the third Aspen Seminar for Young European Leaders entitled “Europe, the Next Generation, Shared Values’’ took place in Annecy, France, jointly organized by the Aspen Institute France and the Aspen Institute Germany and supported by the Aspen Initiative for Europe. The seminar brought together twenty-seven young leaders representing eighteen different nationalities, and engaged in fields as varied as technology, medicine, law, media, education, finance, and public policy. On the basis of classical and modern texts of renowned European and non-European philosophers and thinkers, the participants reflected on timeless ideas and their own beliefs and values as well as on European ideals and their continued relevance in today’s world. The seminar was moderated by Leigh Hafrey, Senior Lecturer in the Behavioral and Policy Sciences at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, and Miguel Herrero, Professor of Classics at Madrid’s Complutense University.
This invitation-only workshop is the fifth in a global series across the Aspen Institute network of International Partners to bring together future leaders to address the impact of technology on society, hosted by Aspen France.
This gathering of the Aspen Ministers Forum in Versailles, France focused on the rise of extreme nationalism, the dangers it presents, and what actions can be taken to push it back.
